Prof. Dr. Timur GÜRGAN
Prof. Dr. Timur GÜRGAN was born in Malatya. He started his academic career as an assistant professor at Hacettepe University in 1985 which he pursued as an associate professor as of 1988 and full professor as of 1995 at the Department of Women’s Disease and Obstetrics of the same university. He served as a lecturer at the university’s Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Unit and resigned in 2014.
Prof. Dr. Timur GÜRGAN Academic Life
Starting from 1986, Timur GÜRGAN worked as a research associate at London Hospital Medical College, St Bartholomew’s Hospital, Lister Hospital, London Bridge Hospital and Guy’s Hospital in the United Kingdom, and at Haddasah University in Israel. He assumed teaching and research positions on disorders of reproductive endocrinology, IVF, and fertility at Vancouver British Colombia University in Canada; at Cornell Hospital, Infertility and IVF Center; The Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Science of Saint Barnabas, New Jersey and The Center of Biology Associates, Atlanta in USA, and at Bourne Hall Clinic in United Kingdom and on endoscopic surgery at Heidelberg University, Germany; Catholic University of Brussels, Belgium. Moreover, he worked together with leading experts on reproductive medicine, assisted reproductive techniques, microsurgery, and endoscopic surgery in a number of major hospitals and centers around the world. In 1995, he worked as a visiting professor for 6 months at the infamous Cornell University in New York, USA.
Prof. Timur Gürgan was in charge as the president of the Department of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Hacettepe University for 10 years. Timur GÜRGAN also directed the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Hacettepe University between 1997 and 2000. In his era, gynecologic endoscopy, IVF, andrology and menopause sub-departments were established within the department. In collaboration with many international experts, he introduced numerous important subjects within his expertise, participated in training activities, and led the way of advanced reproductive medicine which are currently adopted.

In 1988, he became a member of ESHRE (European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology) and worked as a member of the International Scientific Committee of this society for more than 10 years. He has also been a member of American Society for Reproductive Medicine since 1988. He is among the founders of European Society for Gynecological Endoscopy and worked as a member of executive work between 1996 and 2001. He is also takes part in the International Scientific Committee of the Middle East Fertility Society (MEFS). He acted as a representative of American Association of Gynecological Endoscopy in Turkey and contributed to the association as an international advisor.
Prof. Timur Gürgan also organized around 20 national and international congresses, symposiums, and workshops attaining brilliant scientific success.
He is one of the founding members of The International Society of In Vitro Fertilization where he worked as the general secretary and the board member responsible for educational activities. In May 2005, he took the chair as the head of the World International Assisted Reproductive Techniques and Genetics Congress (IVF) that took place in Istanbul. This year in the meeting organized in Copenhagen, he was elected as the head of the association for 2 years. Within his time, he will organize the annual congress of the association at Antalya/Turkey in October 2017.
He is a board member of Mediterranean Society for Reproductive Medicine (MSRM) and will start his presidency at 2017. He was the head of the congress in the international congress held by this society at Antalya in April 2007. The society will have its annual congress at Izmir in 2016, again under his precidency.
In May 2007, he was selected as a board member of ESHRE (European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology, the biggest and most prestigious reproductive medicine association in Europe. He is the first Turkish doctor ever selected for this position. He was the head of the congress held in Istanbul in 2012 by ESHRE, one most massive associations in the world in their field, with a total attendance of around 10.000 people. Furthermore, he was appointed as general coordinator of special interest groups in the same association between 2013 and 2015.
He is the author of more than a hundred scientific papers published in national and international scientific journals and international books. He serves as an editorial board member of several scientific journals such as RBM Online, MEFS Journal, and AAGL Journal. He gives presentations and conferences more than 10 times a year in significant international congresses and meetings.
Among his special interests are reproductive hormone disorders and menopause, gynecologic endoscopic surgery, polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis, high-risk pregnancies, infertility, IVF and human genetics. He has internationally indexed, enlightening scientific publications on these subjects.
He carried out board membership in Turkish Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Turkish Society of Menopause. He is a founding member of Turkish Society for Reproduction and has been a board member for 3 terms. He was the head of the Society of National Reproductive Medicine during the period of 2008-2010.
In 2010, he was excused from his duty in Hacettepe University in order to be employed as the founding dean of newly established Yeni Yüzyıl University Faculty of Medicine and there also worked as the Manager of Institute of Health Sciences. He completed with this duty and turned back to this office in Hacettepe University in April 2011.
He worked in the IVF Science Committee of Ministry of Health for 8 years. He attended international courses on hospital management.
Besides his academic work, he is the scientific director of Gürgan Clinic of Women’s Health, Infertility and IVF Center that he founded in 2000. The center is an outstanding reference center of the country with its scientific and clinic success and manages the treatment of around 1000 patients annually.
